Hello my name’s Remi, I am a documentary filmmaker working internationally across a wide range of projects and topics.

Since 2011 I have been lucky enough to work for a broad range of clients from small NGOs to big brands and everything in between. What drives me to create visual content is to establish connections with people; whether it’s with other people or ways of thinking, or to a brand/product.

Another passion of mine is travel and nature. You will often find me up a mountain or learning new things from new friends in various places across the world.

On this #earthday I wanted to share a bit about my recent trip to the Amazon with @naturalsymphonylive

We were invited to join a pilgrimage journey with the Seikopai @nacion.siekopai to their ancestral land, Pëkëya or Lagartacocha (lake of crocodiles). This trip was organised by the incredible organisation @yakum.ec in order to collect the seeds of special ancestral foods of the Seikopai, that only grow in Lagartacocha, so they can take them back to their current territory and replant vast areas of land that have been illegally deforested by land grabbers.

The Seikopai have been in a long legal battle to re gain their legal land title to Lagartacocha after fleeing from it during the war between Ecuador and Peru in the 1940s. So this trip was really important for them to reconnect back to their sacred land and the stories, mythologies & foods that are specific to there. And for the elders to pass down this knowledge to the younger generations so that this deep connection is not lost.

What is so clear from speaking to everyone there is the importance of connecting deeply to the natural world. It is alive and we are such a part of it. And maintaining this connection to it is vital to protecting it.

Sounds and sights of the Amazon 🌳

This is a collection of clips from a larger project in the making, that I’m working on with @naturalsymphonylive, @kate.fleur.young @yakum.ec, and the power of nature. We spent a few weeks in the Ecuadorean Amazon listening to many people about how they experience the forest and the spirits that dwell there. A spiritual connection to the natural world is key to protecting it. Protecting this knowledge and reconnecting people to it is of upmost importance.

We are constantly in communication with the world around us. We may not know it and think we cannot feel it, but there’s a subtle thread that connects us all.

Through Joeys work (@naturalsymphonylive) he is showing us that we are truly in a conversation with the natural world. It is not only our physical touch that affects the plants and trees around us but also our energy, our mood, our intentions. The same happening with other people and animals. The people we spent time with and spoke with in the forest already have this understanding, and by maintaining that deep connection with the forest we are more likely to protect it.

When I first contacted @northernpoet I was in the process of planning a documentary about reconnecting to the ancient nature based wisdom and spirituality of the misty rugged lands of Britain. After hearing Val Freya I knew I wanted to make a film with his song and make it an ode to landscape of these isles. A place that is home on a deep level, but that I have only very recently truly connected too. Not to the identity of this country or the nationality, but to the power the natural landscape has. It really is full power, it holds me and makes me feel home. If you haven’t explored the British Isles much then I highly recommend it.

The call of the Bald Eagle is so distinctive. It bubbles through the air like falling shards of thin glass. I’d never heard anything like it.
These massive birds rule the sky around Vancouver Island. At first when we arrived it was insane to think you could be so close to these animals. Often just chilling on a lamppost or in a nearby tree. It became such a joy to hear the sounds bouncing off the water and then searching to find where they were. These majestic birds hold so much power 🦅

It’s easy to get overwhelmed and caught up in the whirrings of life. What you have done, what you haven’t, that you’re this or that. But it’s so special to just sit and enjoy what is. Currently watching the sun rise over the rolling western grassy landscape on a bus into London and it’s beautiful. A moment of serene beauty on the M4.
It’s been a year of new connections, new places and faces. New city. Jumping into the next chapter living in the West Country with @sophiemaymason. Open to what is coming, wherever it may lead. Reconnecting back to the power of this land and the knowledge of the ancients 🌳🪶🍄

The journey of the Janga Bus.

In 2018 the idea of the @jangabus was born. I was in The Gambia with @kadect_ making a short doc about the impact of the specialist deaf schools set up by the charity. For children that are born deaf in The Gambia there is often no way to access an education, and the impacts this leads to can be catastrophic. Since the opening of the KADECT schools deaf children in rural parts of the North Bank region in The Gambia have been able to access an education and is making a huge difference to their lives. There were however many more deaf children who were unable to get to the school due to lack of transport. This is where the Janga Bus comes in! (‘Janga’ means ‘education’ in the local language of Wollof).

So in early 2018 we realised that the school needed a school bus and we set about making it happen. We worked out that for the price we would pay we could get a much better quality van from Europe and drive it there rather than buying one locally. It was also a chance to make an awareness raising campaign for @kadect_ and deaf education as a whole in The Gambia. So the fundraising began, and the planning.

Almost 2 years later we had finally raised enough money, had found a perfect van in Germany, and we set off on a frosty January morning in 2020. The year everything changed, we just didn’t know it yet.

This short film (released Jan 26th on @matadornetwork & here, YouTube, Vimeo etc) is a look into the journey we, Alex (my sister from another mister) and I, went on. The trip took us from The UK through France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and finally The Gambia. Along the way we also wanted to see what accessing an education looked like for children in the different countries we passed through.

These screen grabs give a little taste of what we experienced along the way. This film being released also marks 4 years since the project began and countless sinking feelings that the project wouldn’t even happen, that we wouldn’t raise enough money, that the journey was too hard, and if this edit would ever be finished! But here it is…

A much needed reminder that connection can be so transformational 🌳

We have a duty to connect back to ourselves, back to our earth, our home, and to each other. It’s a necessity. Go outside and feel the earth on your skin. Touch a tree and allow yourself to feel its energy. It’s all there you just need to allow yourself to feel it again. And when you do it’s pure love. It’s not total nonsense, it’s genuine. It’s us. It’s home.
