KADECT – The Gambia Deaf Children Charity

If you were born deaf in The Gambia it could mean a life with no hope for the future due to the lack of education services for deaf children. In 2010 KADECT set up it’s first deaf school unit in Basse, a remote area far away from Banjul, the capital. Since then the children at this deaf school, who before could not attend school and also who’s family would sometime refuse them to go school, these children can now read and write (as well as international sign!) at the same level as all of the other children in their year. They now have the ability to go anywhere they want. They have a future.

I spent a week with KADECT in January 2018 in The Gambia visiting the schools and seeing first hand what a huge impact these schools are having on these children. There is still more work to be done and KADECT is already working on creating a larger school to allow even more deaf children the chance of an education.
